The Best Burger Joints in Montreal

If you ever visit Montreal, you ought to try out the various Canadian treats that you won’t find back home. This means trying out the poutine, along with such delicacies as butter tarts, BeaverTails, tourtière, Saskatoon berry pie, and figgy duff.

But after a while, you may find yourself yearning for some good, old-fashioned burger. If that’s the case and you’re in Montreal, then you’re in a for a treat. Here are some must-visit places when you’re in the mood for a burger in Montreal:

This doesn’t seem like a 5-star restaurant, and the griddle looks like it hasn’t been cleaned for decades. But that’s part of its charm, along with their famous Good Morning Burger. It comes with premium beef and a fried egg, along with all the other classic toppings. This may not be a healthy way to start your day, but the taste of this burger is worth the risk.

Bâton Rouge

This is a family-friendly steakhouse, with the mega cheeseburger hogging the spotlight. You just have to order this, as it comes with premium-grade beef, smoked bacon, Dijonnaise, pickles, tomatoes, and shredded lettuce. Add the huge pile of French fries, and you won’t need a snack for many hours to come.

You’ll find this on Rachel Street, where it reopened after an unfortunate fire shut it down for 6 months in 2018. But it’s back with a vengeance, with various burger options featuring not just beef but also lamb, veal, and even deer meat.

However, many say that the #1 option here is the best. You get your beef patty enhanced with Emmental cheese, along with bacon and mushrooms. It’s this burger that really brings people back here.

Mister Steer

It’s true that this downtown location isn’t all that trendy anymore. But it still attracts lots of patrons. It’s near the Montreal Canadiens arena, and the décor is quite charming. And then you have the burgers, which are just great.

The key factors here are that first, the place only uses kosher beef. Also, everything is fresh. Nothing here is ever frozen, except for the ice cream. Your best option here is to with the Giant Steerburger, with the beef patty resembling a rock that you can use as a weapon!

This is a burger chain brand that’s been serving burgers since 1929, and you have to try their Buck Burger.  You start with the buns, which you can get steamed, dry, wet (that is, brushed with burger juices), or the dip (brushed with hot pepper brine. Then you can add cheese, hot peppers, and capricola. It’s just yummy and fatty.

This is a tavern you can find on Centre Street in Pointe-Saint-Charles, where the atmosphere is laidback and the bar is nicely decorated. Yes, you can enjoy some drinks during happy hour, but you really have to try the burger. The beef patty comes with polish ham, plus mayonnaise, hot mustard, and pickles. It’s a seemingly simple combination that’s just plain terrific.

Le Hachoir

It’s true that the place is famous for its legendary beef tartares, but the burgers here also deserve some recognition. You have 2 great options here, starting with the Québecois. This features an 8-ounce beef patty, stuffed with cheese curds, Montreal smoked meat spices, coleslaw, pickles, and spicy mustard. It may be a bit messy to eat, but who cares?

The other option is the Le Double Cheese Classique, and this time you get a couple of 4-ounce beef patties. These are joined by the cheese, bacon, pickles, red onions, and some secret sauce. The whole thing is just fantastic.

Burger Bar Crescent

This has more than 20 different burger version on the menu, and each one is special. You won’t choose wrong with any option, but you really should try the Hangover version at least once. This is a burger with a small-sized poutine between the buns, and how Canadian can you get? It also features mushrooms, arugula, caramelized onions, and a roasted garlic aioli.

Valentine is a franchise restaurant brand, with about 95 locations all over the country. It has 5 locations in Montreal alone, so you should be able to find one with no trouble.

The focus with Valentine is on comfort food, which is why their menu consists mainly of hotdogs, club sandwiches, and since it’s in Canada, poutine. You won’t have to spend a lot here, as you can confirm on the Valentine page on Pricelisto
